Reconstructing Faith
About Lesson

In college I read a book called “Save me from myself” by Brian Welch, a former singer for the band Korn. He talks about his journey from hardcore drugs and partying to becoming a Christian. At the end of the book he mentions that someone told him about speaking in Tongues and that he has really benefitted from it.

I thought that was interesting and tried it myself. It felt awkward and unnatural at first. But the more I did it, the more it felt natural. These days I pray mostly in tongues.

What is tongues? Well, it depends on who you talk to. How I use and view tongues for myself personally is the verse Romans 8:26: “…for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words.” I believe that our feelings and inner knowing is beyond words, is deeper than words. When I pray in tongues I express sound randomly, but feel very deeply inside what I want to convey to God. Sometimes the feeling is gratitude, sometimes its pain, fear, or anger. Sometimes its love or awe. I just view it as an authentic way to connect with God that gets beyond my analytical mind that can sometimes actually hinder my connection with God.

So you might try it and see what you think. Maybe it will help you too!
